Managing Pain with Guided Imagery in the ICU
Eileen Phillips, RN, Director of Nursing
Riddle Memorial Hospital – Media, PA
Sereneview curtains are a way to help patients manage pain with guided imagery. Patients now request rooms based on the scene on the Sereneview curtain.
Riddle Memorial Hospital in the Philadelphia suburb of Media, PA, is committed to providing patients with progressive medical services and compassionate care. The hospital has twice been voted “Best Hospital in Delaware County” by the readers of the Delaware County Daily Times.
Former Director of Nursing, Laurie Vogel, RN, saw the Sereneview curtains at a Leadership Conference, and recognized they could provide a way to help patients manage pain with guided imagery.
After the curtains were installed in the ICU, the staff conducted a survey of the patients to measure their effect. One of the objectives was to raise their HCAPS scores through patient satisfaction. Eventually patients began to request rooms based on the scene on the curtain, such as asking for the Catalina room with the Little Harbor curtain.
The results showed a score of 119 out of 130 possible for a 91.54% score. The ICU also saw an increase in staff morale with the curtains. Click here to read results of the survey as presented at the 2009 Planetree Annual Conference in Baltimore.
